As BYD Australia celebrates a significant milestone, the brand has reached a cumulative sales figure of 100,000 vehicles in just three-and-a-half years since its first delivery. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the growing demand for electric and hybrid vehicles in Australia.
Achieving Success
BYD’s success story began in 2022 with the launch of the Atto 3 electric small SUV, which marked the brand’s entry into the Australian market. Since then, BYD has expanded its local lineup to include six electric models and five plug-in hybrid models, catering to Australia’s best-selling vehicle segments.
BYD’s Growth
BYD’s growth in Australia has been nothing short of remarkable. In 2024, the brand sold 20,418 vehicles, but this figure skyrocketed to 52,415 units in 2025, representing a 156.2% increase. This surge was largely driven by the launch of its two best-selling models, the Sealion 7 and Shark 6.
Factory-Owned Distribution Model
In mid-2025, BYD switched to a factory-owned distribution model, taking over from third-party distributor EVDirect. This move has enabled the brand to better serve its customers and expand its national network.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, BYD Australia is poised for continued growth. In 2026, the brand has reported a 9.9% increase in sales, with 17,541 vehicles sold so far this year. This could result in BYD selling nearly 60,000 cars by the end of the year.
Stephen Collins’ Insights
BYD Australia’s chief operating officer, Stephen Collins, reflected on the brand’s remarkable growth, stating: “Australian motorists want stylish, practical and affordable new energy vehicles, now more than ever. It’s our pleasure to hand over our 100,000th vehicle today.”
Expanding Network
Collins added: “With over 100 sales and service centers around Australia, and growing, we’re proud to be building a national network that will support all BYD owners. We have exciting plans for continued growth in Australia.”
New Model Launches
BYD has recently launched several new models, including the Seal 6 plug-in hybrid sedan and wagon, Shark 6 cab-chassis, and Shark 6 Performance with a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity. The brand has also introduced the Atto 1 hatchback – Australia’s cheapest electric car – the Atto 2 electric SUV, and Sealion 5 and Sealion 8 plug-in hybrid SUVs.
Denza Luxury Brand
BYD’s luxury Denza brand is now available in Australia, offering the B5 and B8 off-road plug-in hybrid SUVs and the D9 electric people mover. The Z9 GT electric ‘shooting brake’ wagon is set to follow by the end of this year.
Sales Figures
According to sales data, the Sealion 7 (4468) is Australia’s second-best-selling electric vehicle so far in 2026, behind the Tesla Model Y (5897). The Shark 6 (3480) has outsold familiar names such as the Volkswagen Amarok (1104), Nissan Navara (1602), Mazda BT-50 (3113), and GWM Cannon (3131).
