Volvo has appointed Klaus Zellmer, the current head of Skoda, as its new president and CEO. Zellmer has nearly 30 years of experience at the Volkswagen Group, mostly spent at Porsche, and has led Skoda since 2022.

During his tenure at Skoda, Zellmer oversaw the expansion of the company’s electric vehicle line-up, resulting in record growth and profits. He will assume the CEO and president role at Volvo “no later than 1 October 2027”, ensuring a seamless transition from current leader HÃ¥kan Samuelsson.

Zellmer cited Volvo’s strong reputation for safety as a key factor in his decision to join the company. Eric Li, president of Volvo’s parent firm Geely, praised Zellmer’s experience in both premium and high-volume brands, saying it makes him an excellent fit for Volvo.

Volvo has invested heavily in electric technology and software, but has faced challenges due to slower-than-expected EV uptake. The company has stabilized after a difficult rollout of its EX90, ES90, and EX60 EVs and plans to launch 13 new cars by 2030. Zellmer will join the company at a critical time, as it seeks to strengthen its position as a leading premium car company.

Outgoing CEO HÃ¥kan Samuelsson, 75, returned to lead Volvo in March 2025 after his replacement Jim Rowan was ousted. Samuelsson has been instrumental in the company’s growth, particularly during its early push into electric vehicles. The Board is confident that, under Klaus Zellmer’s leadership, Volvo Cars will build on its strong foundations and enter its next chapter with a clear ambition to strengthen its position as a leading premium car company, according to Eric Li.
