BMW Unveils 3 Series Petrol Models with Neue Klasse Design - bmw 3 series
Dr. Mike Reichelt leads BMW’s Neue Klasse initiative for the new 3 Series.

BMW has unveiled the new 3 Series, introducing a bold Neue Klasse design language across its petrol-powered executive saloon. The model, designated G50, follows the launch of the fully electric i3 earlier this year, sharing styling elements with the electric variant while offering traditional combustion options for UK buyers. Dr Mike Reichelt, head of Neue Klasse at BMW, emphasized that the new platform represents a scalable and global approach being applied across the brand’s entire model range, with the 3 Series marking its debut at the brand’s core.

Engine Options and Performance

In the UK, BMW will offer two petrol engines at launch. The 320 features a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology, delivering 211 horsepower and 243lb ft of torque to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. This model accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds, with a top speed of 149mph. The higher-performance M350 xDrive utilizes a 3.0-litre straight-six twin-turbo engine, producing 443hp and 428lb ft of torque through BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. It reaches 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds and has a governed top speed of 155mph.

The M350 xDrive includes a planned 2027 software update introducing a “Drift Moment” feature that directs all torque to the rear axle for controlled oversteer. Exterior enhancements such as special M Yellow lights inspired by BMW’s GT racing cars and a lip spoiler distinguish the sporty variant. Both models maintain similar dimensions to the electric i3, though serious enthusiasts may spot subtle differences between the petrol and electric variants.

Interior Features and Technology

The new 3 Series adopts the radical Panoramic iDrive setup first seen in the iX3 electric SUV and i3. The interior features a Panoramic Vision Display spanning the dashboard width, showing speed, navigation, and customizable widgets. A 17.9-inch central touchscreen controls iDrive functions, while a multi-button steering wheel provides alternative access. All models include Amazon Alexa AI+ integration and a panoramic sunroof. Luggage capacity stands at 450 litres, 30 litres more than the i3, though the electric version compensates with a 31-litre front trunk.

Equipment levels vary by trim. The base 320 starts at £44,975 with 18-inch wheels, heated front seats, and a rear-view camera. M Sport adds styling tweaks, M Sport brakes, ambient lighting, and a sports steering wheel. M Sport Pro upgrades include an illuminated grille, adaptive LED headlights, and M steering wheel. The top-tier M350 xDrive commands £66,785, featuring a Harman Kardon audio system, adaptive M suspension, and three-zone climate control.

Production begins next month, with UK deliveries scheduled for January 2027. BMW’s online configurator is already available for customers to customize their ideal executive saloon. The fully electric 3 Series, priced from £47,925, is expected to follow shortly after the petrol models hit the market.
