
General Motors and its partners are making measurable progress on a nationwide electric vehicle charging network that now stretches across more than 25 states. The automaker, along with Pilot Company and EVgo, confirmed Tuesday that over 130 fast-charging locations are operational, with plans to keep building.
The three companies originally announced in 2022 that they would install up to 2,000 EV fast-charging stalls at 500 travel centers. These are the Pilot and Flying J locations where drivers can find lounges, free Wi-Fi, food options, and 24-hour staffing. The network uses CCS connectors capable of delivering up to 350 kilowatts.

A corridor from Michigan to Georgia is now covered
The charging stations now span Interstate 75 from Michigan down to Georgia, along with several other regional corridors in the South and Midwest. That matters for road-trippers who have long worried about finding reliable charging outside major cities.
But this network isn’t the only one GM has its hands in. The automaker is also a founding backer of Ionna, a separate fast-charging joint venture formed in 2023 with BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Stellantis. Toyota has since joined that group. Ionna plans to deploy 30,000 chargers by 2030, roughly matching the size of Tesla’s current Supercharger network. Each Ionna unit can charge at up to 400 kW for one vehicle or split that power for two vehicles at 200 kW each, and it supports plug-and-charge compatibility.
More chargers are coming beyond the travel centers
Tuesday’s update does not cover everything GM and EVgo are building.

The two companies have plans for 2,850 charging stalls overall. Last September they announced urban “flagship” charging sites designed like gas stations, with 350-kW connectors, set to open in major U.S. metro areas starting in 2025. GM is also working with ChargePoint to roll out 500 DC fast-chargers at up to 500 kW each, using ChargePoint’s OmniPort adapter that works with both CCS and NACS standards. These units will carry the GM Energy brand.
Reliability is a concern for EV drivers outside the Tesla network.

A recent survey found that users of third-party networks such as EVgo, Blink, and Shell Recharge reported more than ten times the number of problems compared to Tesla Supercharger users. The survey drew from thousands of charging sessions, capturing both good and bad experiences.
Automakers getting more directly involved in charging infrastructure could help smooth those issues over. GM’s hands-on approach with these networks means the company has a direct incentive to improve the experience, rather than leaving it entirely to third-party operators. Whether that will be enough to match Tesla’s reliability record remains to be seen, but the pieces are being put into place.
