GAC Australia sales surpass targets

GAC Australia has exceeded its own sales forecast, with around 4000 vehicles sold since its launch in November 2025. The company’s CEO, Kevin Shu, says GAC is on track to sell more than 4000 vehicles in the second half of 2026.

GAC arrived in Australia with three models: the Emzoom hybrid hatch, the Aion V mid-size electric SUV, and the M8 hybrid people mover. A fourth model, the Aion UT electric hatch, joined the local lineup in March.

Kevin Shu told media that the company is targeting a top-10 brand ranking by 2030. He expects GAC to be among the 10 best-selling brands sooner, perhaps even by 2028.

Australia’s 10th-best selling auto brand in 2025 was MG with 41,298 sales. In the first six months of 2026, Tesla ranked 10th with 23,588 sales. GAC’s sales rate would place it around 23rd among the 70-odd auto brands present in Australia.

Kevin Shu says GAC is a long-term challenger to both BYD and Toyota. He believes the brand’s ability to compete with market leaders is based on three factors: the growth of Chinese brands, the arrival of more models, and the company’s continued dealer rollout. They plan to introduce more than 10 new models in the next two to three years, including multiple SUVs and a yet-to-be-named ute to rival the top-selling Ford Ranger.

Chinese brands grew from 18.6 per cent of market share in June 2025 to 39.6 per cent in June 2026. It has yet to decide the powertrain for the new ute, which is expected to reach Australian showrooms in 2027. GAC Australia could also offer connected cars with various powertrains.

Kevin Shu expects electric vehicles to continue their rise and become more popular than hybrids. He believes that once you drive an electric car, you never go back to internal combustion-engined cars. They will face increased competition from established brands, such as Audi, which has launched the 2025 A6 Sportback E‑Tron at $67,195.

GAC’s continued dealer rollout is also a key factor in the company’s success. The target is to have 60 sites across the country by the end of 2026. Kevin Shu says GAC is the only Chinese brand that can enjoy all segment products, all engine types, which gives the company confidence to survive and have long-term success in the market.

They are positioning themselves to be a major player in the Australian market.

The company’s focus on electric vehicles and its commitment to providing high service to customers will be key to its success. With its aggressive plans for new models and expansion, GAC is likely to achieve its goals.
