Tesla Deliveries Lose Their Luster

Tesla is expected to report around 406,024 deliveries for the second quarter of 2026, along with an estimated 13.8 GWh of energy storage deployments. The market impact of this number is minimal.

The estimate was compiled from a wide range of banks and research shops, including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Wedbush. The broader conversation around Tesla has shifted to other topics.

For years, Tesla was seen as a car company, with a focus on selling more cars and growing the business. However, the company’s delivery growth has stalled, with 2023 being the peak year for annual deliveries at 1.81 million. Since then, Tesla has reported a decline in deliveries for two consecutive years.

This has led to a shift in narrative, with Tesla now being positioned as an energy, AI, and autonomy player that also builds cars. Some view this as a convenient reframing, while others see it as a natural maturation of the company.

Tesla’s Robotaxi project has taken priority over other initiatives, with investors and the public focusing on the development of autonomous vehicles and ride-hailing services. The company aims to turn transportation into a service, using its Full Self-Driving suite to operate a ride-hailing network.

The Cybercab, already in production, is a key part of this strategy. Tesla is betting that the billions of real-world miles it has logged will become a valuable asset, rather than just the number of cars sold each quarter.

While the narrative shift is real, it’s not a free pass for Tesla. The company still needs to sell vehicles and keep investors satisfied while the autonomy story plays out.

Deliveries are still important, but they’re no longer the only focus.

A solid quarter is expected. The stock no longer lives or dies on delivery numbers.

Tesla has bought itself room to develop its Robotaxi vision. The company still needs to deliver on its promises and keep investors satisfied.

For now, Tesla has managed to shift the focus away from deliveries and towards its autonomy ambitions.

Tesla will continue to develop its Robotaxi project.
