Volkswagen recalls 22,524 ID.4s over fire risk - id4 recall
The recall affects 22,524 ID.4 crossovers built between January 1 2023 and February 1 2025.

Volkswagen is recalling 22,524 ID.4 crossovers in the United States after reports that certain high-voltage batteries may overheat and catch fire while charging. The automaker has not yet identified the root cause of the defect.

Recall details and affected models

The recall applies to ID.4s built between January 1 2023 and February 1 2025. NHTSA lists the affected fleet at 22,524 vehicles, matching the figure supplied by the manufacturer.

More than twenty thermal incidents have been linked to packs supplied by SK Battery America. The cases date from late 2024, and the automaker submitted the 26V630 campaign to regulators at the end of September 2026, followed by a formal letter in early October.

Investigators are focusing on thermal propagation, a process where an overheating cell ignites neighboring cells. The agency’s filings tie the defect to manufacturing issues in SK Battery America modules, such as shifted electrodes that can overheat.

This recall follows earlier campaigns, 25V836 and 26V030, that covered roughly 44,000 ID.4s from 2023-2025 with the same SK-built packs. Those earlier actions also carried fire-risk warnings and charge limits.

Temporary charging limit

Volkswagen’s interim solution is an over-the-air software update that caps charging at 80 percent for vehicles with connectivity. Vehicles that cannot receive the update will get a sticker reminding owners to stop charging manually at the same level.

The battery supplier is working closely with the automaker. The Group Product Safety Committee has asked SK Battery America for production details and a “clean date,” the point after which the defect no longer appears.

Owner notification letters are slated for mailing in late November or early December 2026 under campaign 93EX. A second round of letters will follow once a permanent remedy is ready. No repair timeline has been announced.

Potential buyers of used ID.4s built in the affected window should ask dealers to verify the VIN against campaign 93EX before completing a purchase. The company is also offering a discount on new ID.4 orders, though that incentive is separate from the recall.

Registering for recall notifications with NHTSA and watching for the forthcoming Volkswagen letter are the next steps for current owners. The investigation into the battery anomaly remains ongoing, and the agency will continue to monitor compliance with the interim charging limit.
