Ford Recalls Bronco SUVs Over Rollaway Risk

Ford is recalling nearly 5,000 Bronco SUVs due to a potential issue that could cause the vehicles to roll away. The recall affects 2021 to 2025 model year Broncos that were previously repaired, but may have misaligned drivetrain splines that can wear prematurely.

The problem stems from a misaligned transmission-to-transfer case joint, which can cause the transmission’s output-shaft spline and the transfer case’s input-shaft spline to wear prematurely. This can prevent torque transfer and stall forward movement, and also keep the park pawl function from working properly, posing a rollaway risk unless the Bronco’s parking brake is engaged.

According to the recall documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue could cause the affected SUVs to lose motive power or possibly roll away. Ford says the warning signs are a grinding or clunking noise, and is advising owners to bring their Bronco to a dealership to have the problem fixed.

This will involve properly aligning the joint connecting the transmission and transfer case using correctly torqued bolts. If the existing splines show excessive wear, they’ll be replaced. This work will be covered under warranty.

Recall Details

Ford has already notified dealers, but every owner might not receive a letter until September 30, 2026. In the meantime, people can call 1-866-436-7332 or contact a local Ford or Lincoln dealership to check on the status of their Bronco.

The recall is the latest in a series of recalls affecting Ford owners. Recently, the company recalled 1.4M F-150 pickups after an investigation, and 422K trucks and SUVs with bad wiper arms.

Affected Vehicles

  • 2021 Ford Bronco
  • 2022 Ford Bronco
  • 2023 Ford Bronco
  • 2024 Ford Bronco
  • 2025 Ford Bronco

The NHTSA has also announced plans to ban deadly crash-related airbags, and other manufacturers, such as Kia and Genesis, have recalled vehicles due to various issues, including a fuel leak and hybrid system failure.

In room 304 of the NHTSA headquarters, officials are working to address the recall and ensure public safety. The process involves reviewing documents and working with manufacturers to resolve issues.

A Bronco owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, reported hearing a grinding noise while driving, but has not yet had the issue addressed. The owner is waiting for a letter from Ford to schedule a repair.

What to Do

Owners of affected Broncos should contact their local dealership to schedule a repair. The repair will be done free of charge, and owners can expect to have their vehicle fixed within a few hours.

In the meantime, Ford advises owners to be aware of the potential issue and to engage the parking brake when the vehicle is stationary.
